Why Fibre is Important?

Fibre is the indigestible parts of plant foods, such as vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and legumes. It is the type of carbohydrate that helps keep our digestive systems healthy and support regular bowel movement.

Fibre can be classified into 2 types- soluble fibre and insoluble fibre.

Soluble Fibre

Soluble fibre helps to stabilize your blood glucose levels as it slows down the glucose absorption from our digestive system. Soluble fibre is found in fruits, vegetables, oats, barley and legumes.

Insoluble Fibre

Insoluble fibre has the ability to absorb water into our bowel contents, softening stools to support regular bowel movements. It also helps to keep us full for longer period of time. Insoluble fibre is found in wholegrain breads and cereals, nuts, seeds, wheat bran and the skin of fruit and vegetables.

Without adequate dietary fibre intake, a person may become constipated or even develop other health complications, one example being hemorrhoid.

How Much Fiber Is Sufficient?

According to the Recommended Nutrient Intakes for Malaysia, 2017 by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the recommended intake of dietary fiber should be between 20-30g daily. This is the recommendation used for the prevention of diet-related chronic diseases as well.

Signs You May Not Be Taking Sufficient Dietary Fibre

  1. Hard, dry stools

  2. Constipation

  3. Hemorrhoid

  4. Blood glucose fluctuation

  5. Weight gain
